Helicopter Transfers in Thailand: What Is Actually Possible and What Is Not

Most people’s idea of helicopter transfers comes from films rather than real-world aviation.

The image is always the same: a helicopter landing on a rooftop, a villa lawn, or a remote beach. The reality of commercial helicopter charter in Thailand is different, and understanding that difference is what separates a booking that works from one that wastes everyone’s time.

At Jetset Bangkok we arrange helicopter transfers for clients who want to move between Bangkok and specific destinations in Thailand. Here is exactly how it works, what it costs, and what nobody else will tell you before you ask.

The rule that changes everything

Commercial helicopter charter in Thailand is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). A helicopter carrying paying passengers can only land at a licensed commercial helipad. That is not a suggestion. It is the law.

Bangkok has over 20 buildings with structural rooftop helipads across Sukhumvit, Sathon, and Bang Na. Almost none of them are legally active for commercial passenger transit. The CAAT restricts them strictly to emergency medical evacuations and state or military use. The hospital pads you see on buildings like Samitivej exist entirely for Medevac. A commercial charter cannot touch down there regardless of what the client is willing to pay.

The same rule applies across Thailand. There are helipads at hotels, resorts, and private islands that look operational but carry no commercial licence. Without that licence, a commercial helicopter cannot land.

The second rule: helicopters in Thailand do not fly at night. Operations begin at 6am and must be completed by 6pm. Outside of those hours, no commercial flight takes place unless specifically approved by the CAAT or military authority for special conditions. That approval is rare and not something that can be arranged on request.

If you understand these two rules, the rest of planning a helicopter transfer in Thailand becomes much simpler.

The aircraft

The helicopter used for transfers in Thailand is the EC-135, a twin-engine turbine aircraft built for VIP charter work.

It carries up to 5 passengers in a dedicated VIP cabin. The rear storage compartment holds up to 40 cubic feet of luggage, which accommodates approximately 3 to 4 suitcases comfortably. For groups larger than 5 or those travelling with significant luggage, we will recommend either multiple aircraft or a private jet where the route and distance make more sense.

Where you can actually depart from in Bangkok

There are two departure points available for commercial helicopter transfers from Bangkok.

The Peninsula Bangkok helipad is the most prominent licensed commercial helipad in the city centre. It has a dedicated passenger reception lounge and is the standard departure point for most transfers we arrange. There is an additional cost to use this facility as the helipad is rented from the hotel, and that cost is included in what we quote you.

AA Aviation Base near Suvarnabhumi Airport is the second option, primarily used for fleet maintenance and private hub operations.

Medical pads at hospitals are not available for commercial transfers under any circumstances.

Bangkok to Pattaya: the transfer that makes sense

This is the route we get the most requests for and the one where helicopter genuinely changes the experience.

The drive from Bangkok to Pattaya takes between 90 minutes and 3 hours depending on traffic. The helicopter takes 45 minutes. For a group of people who have just landed in Bangkok, cleared immigration, and want to be on a sun lounger in Pattaya before lunch, the comparison is simple.

Flight time: 45 minutes.

Cost: From 240,000 THB excluding 7% VAT per charter. This is a full charter price, not a per-seat price. The price covers the flight, all staff, landing fees, and insurance.

Departure: Peninsula Bangkok helipad or AA Aviation Base.

Arrival: Royal Cliff Hotels Group helipad in Pattaya. This is the licensed commercial landing point for Pattaya. You do not need to be staying at Royal Cliff. We arrange a chauffeur to meet you on landing and transfer you to your hotel, villa, or final destination.

Bangkok to Hua Hin: helicopter is not the answer

When clients ask about a helicopter transfer to Hua Hin, we redirect them. There is no licensed commercial helipad in Hua Hin. All transfers rely on fixed-wing aircraft using Hua Hin Airport.

A propeller plane is the better option for this route. It costs less than a helicopter charter, operates from a proper airstrip, and gets you there without the complications of helipad restrictions. We arrange these transfers through the same process and with the same level of ground coordination.

Bangkok to Phuket: take the jet

A helicopter transfer from Bangkok to Phuket requires at least one stop and takes approximately 3 to 4 hours in the air. By the time you factor in ground transfers, helipad time, and the stop, the journey fills most of a day.

A private jet covers the same distance in under 2 hours and lands at Phuket International Airport with no stops required.

The cost difference between helicopter and jet for this route is minimal. In many cases the jet costs less when you factor in the stop and the extended flight time. For Bangkok to Phuket, the answer depends on the route and in this case the private jet is the right call. We arrange both and will always recommend the option that makes the most sense for your situation.

Route comparison at a glance

The Koh Phangan question

We have received requests from clients who want to land by helicopter on Koh Phangan. Koh Phangan has helipads. None of them hold a commercial licence.

One client was certain she could obtain approval papers from the Thai Government to allow a landing. We told her we would be happy to look into the possibilities once she had the papers. She never came back.

This is not a problem that can be solved with money or relationships. The CAAT regulations are not negotiable on a per-booking basis. If you want to reach Koh Phangan, we arrange either a propeller plane to Koh Samui Airport followed by a speedboat across, or a direct speedboat transfer depending on your departure point. Both work well. A helicopter does not.

How we handle a helicopter booking from start to finish

Step 1: You confirm the route, date, and number of passengers.

Step 2: We send the invoice. The booking is confirmed on receipt of payment.

Step 3: We confirm everything with our aviation partners and lock in the departure slot.

Step 4: We handle all the paperwork. Every passenger must be registered before the flight, the same way you register for a commercial airline. A valid passport or official identification is compulsory for every person on board. We collect this from you and submit it so nothing is outstanding on the day.

Step 5: On the day of the transfer, a Jetset chauffeur picks you up from your hotel or location and drives you to the departure helipad. You arrive, you board.

Step 6: From that point the aviation team takes control of the flight.

Step 7: On landing, a Jetset chauffeur is already at the destination helipad waiting to transfer you to your final destination.

You do not manage a single logistical detail between confirmation and arrival.

Who actually books helicopter transfers

The requests we receive are usually very specific.

One client wanted to surprise his girlfriend on arrival. She had just landed in Bangkok after a long-haul flight. Instead of a car to a hotel, he had arranged a helicopter transfer to Pattaya waiting at the Peninsula helipad. She landed in Bangkok and was on a sun lounger at Royal Cliff within the hour. That is a different kind of arrival.

Another client had a full day to manage. A meeting in Pattaya in the morning, back in Bangkok by early afternoon, and a flight to Singapore that evening for a gala dinner. By road, the round trip would have consumed the entire day and put the Singapore flight at risk. The helicopter handled Pattaya and back in under two hours total, and he made his connection with time to spare.

In every case the booking starts the same way: a message asking if a particular route is possible. The answer depends on the route. When it is possible, we tell you exactly what it involves and what it costs. When it is not, we tell you what is.

What happens if the weather changes

Helicopter operations are weather dependent. If conditions make a flight unsafe or non-compliant on the day, the CAAT protocols apply and the flight is rescheduled or refunded. We confirm the situation directly with our aviation partners and communicate with you immediately. You are never left waiting for an answer.

Minimum notice required

We need a minimum of 48 hours to arrange a helicopter transfer. Shorter notice is occasionally possible depending on availability, but 48 hours is the standard. For transfers involving larger groups or less common routes, earlier is always better.

What you are actually booking
